Express yourself with authenticity, humor, passion, and power! This Way of JoyTM workshop will explore how to be spontaneous and flexible while staying grounded and centered in your wei qi (energetic boundaries). Combining “applied qigong” (drawn from longer traditional forms) with movement improvisation, theater games and story-telling techniques, this workshop will provide you with a fun and safe atmosphere to nourish your shen (spirit) and enhance your jing (physical essence) as you dip into your well of creativity. PLUS you will leave with a short, personalized-for-you qigong form that you can use daily to transform stress into vitality.
II. DAVID HAINES – TRAGER MENTASTICE®: MOVEMENT AS A WAY TO AGELESSNESS
Mentastics were originally created out of Milton Trager’s exploration of movement over 70 years ago. Since then, this approach to movement continues to evolve as each person discovers their unique, creative ways to deepen their connection to body and mind. The pleasurable, playful, dance-like movements come out of one’s own curious questioning of “what could be easier, softer, freer?” These questions bring us deeper into a state of alive relaxation, dynamic balance, and effortless being. By applying this open-ended inquiry to our Qigong, we uncover an inherently creative urge toward more spontaneity, freedom and joy.
III. ZHOU XUAN-YUN – TAIJI QUAN AND THE RETURN TO SPONTANEITY
The major focus in modern Taiji Quan is on forms, set patterns of movement practiced the same each time. However, it is also possible to practice Taiji Quan in a spontaneous and creative manner, free from form and set pattern. The key to unlocking Taiji spontaneity is understanding Taiji theory and martial application. This class will begin with a demonstration of Wudang Daoist Taiji Quan. Next, we will discuss the concept of spontaneity in relation to the Daoist concept of Wu Wei (non-action). Movements from the Wudang Taiji Quan form will be taught and their underlying principles will be discussed.
